Martin Retro acoustic guitar strings are the original, real-deal nickel acoustic strings straight out of the 1930s. Retro strings offer a uniquely mellow yet crisp sound that allows your guitar’s natural tonewoods to be heard, not overshadowed. They’re made with tin-plated steel core wire and solid Monel wrap wire — a proprietary blend of nickel and copper that is naturally corrosion-resistant.
What is Monel?
Monel is a solid nickel/copper alloy that is used to make the wrap wire used in Retro strings. It’s not nickel-plate, so there is no chance for plating defects to allow corrosion. Instead, Martin’s proprietary wrap wire is naturally corrosion-resistant, and it’s incredibly strong. Martin also employs a sophisticated winding process in the making of Retro strings that controls the coupling between the core and wrap wire to maximize intonation, yielding consistent tone that sounds like nothing else on the market.
